The Quiet Power of Blooming Differently
It often feels like there is only one way to bloom
For so many of us, we are shaped by a very narrow perception of what success looks and feels like. It is often measured by how fulfilled we feel in our careers, how we appear, or how much we are able to acquire. These ideas of success can become intertwined with what we imagine a state of “bloom” to be: fulfilling, beautiful, and admired.
We are gently taught to long for the chapters in life where we are blooming and flourishing, and to somehow sustain this state indefinitely. The message, though subtle, is powerful: a life in bloom should feel loud, vibrant, expansive, outward-facing, and easily recognised by those around us.
And, much like everything else in the modern world, we begin to expect that we can summon and shape this state of bloom almost instantly.
Blooming is inherently a feminine process
But a bloom cannot be rushed. We may try to force or shape the process, but it never quite unfolds as we hope. Because blooming is just that - a process. It begins quietly, almost imperceptibly, and slowly unfolds when the conditions are right. To rush a bloom is to bypass the very growth that gives it strength, the quiet becoming that allows it to exist fully.
When I find myself questioning parts of life, I often turn to nature for guidance. I think of the flowers in my garden and the gentle lessons they offer to anyone soft enough to truly listen. They have endured the cold, dark days of winter. They have given themselves fully to the first tender shoots of hope that arrive with spring. They remind us of the depth of growth required before anything can bloom in its full beauty.
The truth is, blooming holds something deeply feminine within it. It cannot be hurried. It asks for time, for space, for patience to arrive in its own way. And even when it does, it may not look like what we once imagined, and perhaps that is where its truest beauty lies.
Blooming differently
I find myself wondering when we will collectively realise that there isn’t just one way to bloom. What feels like success for one person may feel like disconnection for another.
For many of us, I think, the soul longs for a quieter kind of blooming, one that may not be widely recognised as success at all. To truly bloom into ourselves can, from the outside, appear less impressive. What was once a life of constant movement and outward striving may soften into slow, present mornings that create space to gently explore the depths of our being.
This, too, is a way of blooming. One that asks nothing of us in performance. One that has nothing to prove, and no need to be seen.
To bloom when no ones watching
At the back of my garden, as I write this, there is a flower. It would be easy to miss amongst everything else. Yet, in a shaded corner, quietly tucked away, it blooms fully and brightly. It does not mind that no one stops to notice or admire it. It blooms for itself, regardless of all that surrounds it. It does not feel lesser because the garden around it is a little unruly. It simply is.
And I find myself wondering if there is something deeply meaningful in having the strength of self to remain present in your own blooming, even when no one else bears witness to it. The world around us may still hold tightly to its narrow ideas of what success should look like. But perhaps blooming and becoming who we truly are has always been about finding the courage to do so in our own way.
A little more quietly.
A little more softly.
A little more within.
A theme on Soul Shala: Blooming Differently
It’s these quiet musings that have shaped our offerings within Soul Shala this month. Rooted in the theme of blooming differently, we’re moving together through a small, thoughtful collection of classes that honour your bloom, whatever it might look like in this chapter.
There’s a Sound Bath to gently quiet the mind, Soft Steps, a walking meditation to bring you back into presence, and Bloom Bravely, a soul session for meeting yourself with courage and care. Each one lovingly created to hold space for your unfolding - however it wishes to take shape.
