The Queen Archetype

When we explore feminine archetypes, we often talk about the Maiden, the Mother, the Lover and the Wild Woman. But there is another archetype that deserves a little more attention: the Queen. The Queen represents feminine sovereignty. She is the woman who knows herself, trusts her judgement and understands that she is responsible for the life she creates.

She doesn't need to dominate others, demand attention or prove her worth. Her power comes from something much quieter: an inner sense of authority and the ability to remain true to herself.

There is a beautiful line from Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility in which Elinor Dashwood declares:

“I will be mistress of myself.”

I think these words capture the essence of the Queen archetype perfectly.

She is a woman who belongs to herself.

The lessons of the Queen Archetype

At her heart, the Queen is an expression of self-governance. She knows what matters to her, has a strong sense of her own values and is comfortable making decisions that reflect them. She doesn't constantly look outside herself for permission or validation. She understands that her time, energy and attention are valuable. She is thoughtful about where she invests them and recognises that she cannot be everything to everyone.

The Queen doesn't seek power over others. She exercises authority over herself.

There may be times in life when we need a little more Queen energy. When we have reached the end of our tether with sacrificing for others, are being pulled in too many directions, struggling to hold our boundaries, making difficult decisions or finding ourselves looking outside for reassurance. The Queen reminds us to pause, come back to ourselves and consider what feels aligned with our values.

She is the energy we can draw upon when we need to stand firm, trust our judgement and remember that we are allowed to have a say in how our lives unfold.

Sovereignty, not rebellion

The Queen is sometimes confused with the Wild Woman archetype because both represent independence and a refusal to be controlled.

However, there is an important distinction.

The Wild Woman represents liberation, instinct and the freedom to live authentically. She challenges the expectations and conditioning that have kept her small.

The Queen represents sovereignty. Rather than simply breaking free from external expectations, she takes responsibility for how she wishes to live.

The Wild Woman reclaims her freedom; the Queen learns how to govern it.

Boundaries, communication and self-respect

The Queen understands that kindness doesn't mean endless accommodation. She can communicate clearly, express her needs and establish boundaries without feeling the need to over-explain herself. She knows that saying no doesn't make her unkind, and that she doesn't have to compromise her values to keep everyone else comfortable. There is a certain firmness to her, but this isn't coldness or a lack of feeling.

The Queen can be loving, compassionate and emotionally open. She can be soft without being a pushover, and firm without being unkind.

The shadow side of the Queen

Like all archetypes, the Queen has a shadow expression. Her boundaries can become walls, her discernment can become judgement and her desire for stability can become controlling or rigid. Sometimes, in trying to protect herself, she may become emotionally unavailable or struggle to let others support her. But true sovereignty doesn't mean isolation. The mature Queen understands that she can love deeply, receive support and be vulnerable without losing herself.

Reflection: Connecting with your inner Queen

Take a little time to reflect on these questions:

  1. Where in your life do you feel most confident and self-assured?

  2. Do you find yourself looking to others for permission or validation before making decisions?

  3. Do you find it difficult to say no or communicate your needs?

  4. Where might you be abandoning your own needs to keep others happy?

  5. What does being sovereign within yourself mean to you?

  6. How could you bring more of the Queen's energy into your everyday life?

Remember, embodying the Queen isn't about becoming harder, less emotional or more independent. It's about developing the confidence to be fully yourself.

You are allowed to be your own authority.
